Hi!
I'm going to Japan from 4 May to 15 May. Plan to go to Kamikochi, Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo.I'll arrive in Narita early morning on 4th of May. Would it be better if I go straight to Kamikochi (via Takayama or Matsumoto) from Narita?
Also will it be better to get a 7 or 14 days JR Pass?
Any other places should I visit? Might do some day trips in between.
Thanks.

Hi there,

Personally I'd head to Tokyo first, because all rail routes to Kamikochi will take you there anyway. You could relax a bit from your flight and then travel on the following morning. Taking a limited express train from Shinjuku station to Matsumoto. Of course you can make the direct direct from Narita Airport if you want be get to Kamikochi without delay.

I would recommend a 7 day JR Pass if you can cover Tokyo - Matsumoto(for travel to Kamikochi) - Kyoto/Osaka - Tokyo with it, this would give you good savings over normal tickets. If you take more than 7 days for this part, then I think buying normal tickets is the best option.

Out of curiosity, what are your plans for Kamikochi? Planning a visit there myself too :)

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks for the reply.

Is Matsumoto a better starting point to Kamikochi than Takayama? Plan to walk around in Kamikochi to see the Japan Alps.
I read it got one of the most spectacular scenery in Japan.

It is good, but if you want spectacular scenery, you will be arriving right at the best time to see the wisteria. One of the best places in just north of Tokyo at the Ashikaga Flower Park. Spectacular blooms like you've never seen before:

I do think that there are better hikes near Matsumoto, the main reason why I suggest it though, it because it's easier to access from Tokyo. Taking a limited express train from Shinjuku to Matsumoto is a very nice ride to make.
