Hi all,

I am planning a trip as follows. Just wondering if a 7 day JR pass is my best option? Or any alternative?

And any comments on whether this is best way to maximise a week in Japan?

It's been very confusing surfing the net for transport options. Though I envy the Japanese for the very siphisticated infrastructure.

Appreciate your advice. Thank you very much!!

Day 1- arrive @ Haneda, head to Shinjuku via Tky monorail and JR Yamanote Line (have a dinner in Shinjuku with friend!)
Day 2 - Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko Stn (Via JR Chuo line, stopping at JR Otsuki stn for Fuji-kyukou Line if buying JR, or will take Romance car otherwise)
Day 3 - Kawaguchiko Stn to Kyoto (via Fuji-kyukou Line and JR Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto)
Day 5 - Then to Tokyo
Day 7 - Leave via Haneda

Hi there!

In general, a 7 day JR Pass starts to break even with 1 return trip to Kyoto from Tokyo. Here's your basic cost breakdown (not including the transfers to/from the airport which is also included in the JR Pass):

  1. Shinjuku(jr) > Otsuki: ¥2,290 (85mins, 77km)
  2. Otsuki > Kyoto: ¥13,640 (253mins, 561km)
  3. Kyoto > Tokyo: ¥13,020 (164mins, 513km)

JR ticket cost: ¥28,950 for 3 legs

As you can see you'll make a tiny saving with the 7 day pass, but will certainly see benefits in terms of increased flexibility. Unless you have a very tight itinerary with no further possible travel, then I think a 7 day pass is a good choice.

Hope this helps!
