We, 2 adults and 2 kids (Age: 9+ and 3+) will travel to Japan this coming May. Thinking to purchase 7 days JR pass for 2 adults and 1 child ticket. However, a bit confuse on the JR pass usage. Can please assist to look thru my itinerary and advice on the visible ways to reach the desire destination accordingly.

Day 1 KIX to Kyoto (JR Pass), and 1 day Kyoto day pass
Day 2 Kyoto – Tokyo (JR pass) - Ikebukuro (JR line) - Ueno, Zoological (JR line) - take Ginza Line to Asakusa to hang around at Sensoji temple area. Can I use JR pass?
Day 3 Ikebukuro -Tokyo - Disneyland via JR line? And buy 2 days monorail pass (for Disneyland and Disneysea)
Day 4 Disneyland – Tokyo - Ikebukuro (JR line?)
Day 5, Ikebukuro - Shinjuku-Mitaka-Shinjuku-Ikebukuro (JR Pass?)
Day 6 Ikebukuro to Shin-osaka, and visit to Dotonbori, Hozenji Yokocho Alley, Tenjibashi and Umeda, Is JR pass working here? or to purchase individual ticket?
Day 7 Shin-Osaka – Nara - Shinsaibashi-Suji Shopping st - Shin Osaka - KIX

Besides, some tourist spot entrance fees is FOC for kids 0-3 year old, (kids age 4-12= kids fare), if my girls is only 3+, do i need to purchase entrance ticket for her too?

Appreciate for your kind advice.

Hi there,

Your itinerary looks very good. In case you don't have it, here's a map of JR lines in Tokyo to help. Here is some clarification on some of your legs:

Day 2 Kyoto – Tokyo (JR pass) - Ikebukuro (JR line) - Ueno, Zoological (JR line) - take Ginza Line to Asakusa to hang around at Sensoji temple area. Can I use JR pass?

I'm afraid not - the JR Pass is not valid on the Tokyo Metro. Sensoji is a 25min walk from Ueno station as an alternative. If not, then the metro will be ¥160 per person.

Day 3 Ikebukuro -Tokyo - Disneyland via JR line? And buy 2 days monorail pass (for Disneyland and Disneysea) Day 4 Disneyland – Tokyo - Ikebukuro (JR line?)

Yes - The JR Pass will take you as far as Maihama, from which you need to get the private line to Disneyland/sea. The same will be true on return.

Day 5, Ikebukuro - Shinjuku-Mitaka-Shinjuku-Ikebukuro (JR Pass?)

Yes, the JR Pass will be fully valid on this route.

Day 6 Ikebukuro to Shin-osaka, and visit to Dotonbori, Hozenji Yokocho Alley, Tenjibashi and Umeda, Is JR pass working here? or to purchase individual ticket?

This should be fine. The JR Pass is very useful in Osaka, where JR has very good coverage JR map. Here are the stations you'll need:

Dotonbori, Hozenji Yokocho Alley - JR Nanba
Tenjinbashi, Umeda - JR Osaka

Day 7 Shin-Osaka – Nara - Shinsaibashi-Suji Shopping st - Shin Osaka - KIX

Shin-Osaka and Nara will be totally covered by JR Pass. Shinsaibashi is a little bit of a walk from JR Nanba, but quite doable. Alternatively, you may like to use the subway here. Shin-Osaka - KIX is also covered by the Japan Rail Pass

Besides, some tourist spot entrance fees is FOC for kids 0-3 year old, (kids age 4-12= kids fare), if my girls is only 3+, do i need to purchase entrance ticket for her too?

If your daughter is under 4 years old, (and the fee is FOC for kids under 4), then she will be able to enter free of charge.

Hope this helps!
