Hi. Our family will be travelling to Japan for two weeks and not sure if it is worth it to buy the rail pass. Or just do 7 days to cover from April 14- April 21?

Also, our daughters are 3 and 5. Do they travel for free on trains?

April 11 arrive in Osaka
April 14 travel to Hiroshima
April 15 travel to Kyoto
April 19 travel to Tokyo
We will be in Tokyo until April 25. During that week we want to do a day trip to Hakone.

Hello there,

Yes a 7 day JR pass would give you great value.

Have a look at normal ticket prices.

Osaka - Hiroshima ¥ 10,230
Hiroshima - Kyoto ¥ 11,090
Kyoto - Tokyo ¥ 13,600

For a total of ¥ 34,920 or ¥ 5,810 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110 + any local travel you may cover with it.

For Children, please see this post. In short, children below the age of 6 can travel for free. However they are not entitled to a seat and you are expected to sit your child on your lap if trains are busy. Additionally each child should have an accompanying adult.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
