Is it more economical to use the JR Pass or purchase each ticket separately

My mum and I are travelling to Japan next month. Our itinerary is as follows:

6 nights in Shinjuku (visiting Ginza, Shibuya, Mt Fuji, Roppongi, Nikko)
2 nights in Hiroshima
5 nights in Kyoto (visiting Osaka and Nara day trips)
1 night Narita

Flying in and out of Narita

Would you recommend we purchase a 14 day JR Pass or purchase each train ticket separately?

Many thanks,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Using a 7 day JR Pass would give you very good savings. Have a look at the following route:

Narita airport - Shinjuku ¥ 3,190
Shinjuku - Hiroshima ¥ 18,560
Hiroshima - Kyoto ¥ 11,090
Kyoto - Osaka (return) ¥ 1,020
Kyoto - Nara (return) ¥ 1,420
Kyoto - Narita ¥ 16,580

For a total of ¥ 51,860 or at least ¥ 5,470 in savings, as the 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 46,390. The JR Pass also covers local JR lines in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. Adding even more to your savings. Additionally you can use the JR Pass on the ferry to Miyajima and Hiroshima sightseeing bus.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
