questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

is it better to buy the jr pass

Is it better to buy the JR Pass

Hi there,

I'm so confused after reading too much in regards the rail pass so I was wondering whether I can get some real info with real people talking.

I'm arriving to Tokyo from Narita airport on 8/4/15. Staying in Tokyo for 8 days.
Moving from Tokyo to Osaka - staying in Osaka for 6 days.
Moving from Osaka to Kyoto - staying 4 days,
Moving from Kyoto back to Narita air port.

Total stay from Narita airport then back 18 days.

Is it cheaper to get the JR rail pass or just get the individual passes from Tokyo to Osaka - Kyoto back to Narita from day 8 - 18 (10 days altogether)?

Thanks for any input here.

Hello there,

A 7 day JR Pass would have made a great choice if you traveled the route Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka - Tokyo within 7 days. Since you have the luxury of 10 days, it is better to buy normal tickets for this itinerary.

A 14 day JR Pass could quickly become worth if a little more Shinkansen travel was involved, such as a day trip to Hiroshima.

Hope this clears things up :)

Thanks Daniel!

When you mean it is better to buy the normal trip, what do you mean by the normal ticket? Is this just a bullet train ticket at Tokyo station? And where can I find the price of this normal trip?

Thanks in advance!

Hi again!

With normal tickets, I mean just buying a ticket at the station before boarding the train.

Ticket prices can be found at www.hyperdia.com.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
