Is it better to buy single trip/regional pass or JR Pass?

Hi there,

I will be in Tokyo for 2 nights for business this May. During the business trip, all my transport is provided by my company, so I don't need to worry about transportation. However, after that, I will stay a few extra days in Japan to continue my personal holiday/schedule. From Tokyo(my hotel is in Shinjuku area), I plan to visit and stay 1 night in Hakone + 3 nights Kyoto. After Kyoto, I need to return to Tokyo's Haneda Airport to catch my flight home. Can you advise if it makes sense to buy the JR Pass for this trip?

Or is it cheaper for me to purchase : Odakyu Railway 'Romance ticket + single trip ticket Hakone to Kyoto + single trip from Kyoto to Haneda Airport?

Hope you can help to advise the best/cheapest option for me? Also, how long is the bullet train ride from Kyoto to Haneda Airport? I need to make sure I do not miss my flight back. Thank you!

Regards
Jacque

Hello Jacque,

Traveling using the JR Pass to travel from between Tokyo - Kyoto and Hakone is nearly the price of a 7 day JR Pass. From there it would be easy to make savings. With 3 days in Kyoto, it would be nice to add in a day trip to Nara, Osaka Kobe or even Hiroshima.

Going to Hakone with the JR Pass. You can use the Shinkansen (bullet trains) for travel to Odawara station. From there you can use local transport to explore Hakone or buy a Hakone Free Pass which works great as companion to the JR Pass.

You should reserve about 4 hours for the full trip from Kyoto - Haneda. There's no Shinkansen station at Haneda. To travel there using the JR Pass. Take the Shinkansen to Tokyo station. From there transfer to the Yamanote line to Hamamatsucho from which you can use to Tokyo Monorail to Haneda Airport.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel-san,

Thank you for the quick reply.

Can I check how I can use my JR Pass to travel from Mount Fuji to Kyoto? It can't seem to find the way to take train for this journey. How long will it take?

Hello Jacqueline,

It depends on what area around Kyoto you wish to visit. Did you have an idea already?

Otherwise you could consider visiting the Hakone area for easy access to Kyoto as well.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
