questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

is a japan rail pass worth it?

Is a Japan Rail Pass worth it?

Thank god for this page as I am having trouble deciding if I should get a JR Pass.

I will be travelling to Hokkaido for 5 days before flying to Tokyo. From Tokyo, I will be taking the Shinkansen to Kyoto for 3 days where I will also do a one day trip to Osaka. I will be back to Tokyo for another 5 days, also via the Shinkansen.

In short, this is my itinerary: Hokkaido - fly to Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka - Kyoto - Tokyo

I hope to travel via the Green Cars for my Tokyo-Kyoto and Kyoto-Tokyo journeys.

  1. Is it worthwhile for me to get a Green Pass?
  2. Should I get an Ordinary Pass and upgrade to the Green Cars for my journey from Tokyo to Kyoto and Kyoto to Tokyo?
  3. Should i skip the JR Pass and just buy the tickets separately?

Many thanks for your help! =)

Hi there!

I've rolled all your questions in one answer are they are all related. I do think that a JR Pass would be well worth considering for your travel. A return ticket Tokyo Kyoto for Green Class is ¥ 36,760 the 7 day JR Green Pass is ¥ 38,880 so it's very close already. Basically it would be worth it if you did a little more travel with the JR Pass, such as to the Airport, which is also included.

Travelling by Green Car is something I personally enjoy a lot. There's a lot less people in Green Class and it's easy to enjoy your travel more. The extra leg space is also great.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much Danial-san! You are a great help to all of us! =)
