If I order a JRP how long does it take to get it?!

I leave for Japan on Feb. 27 and I am just now learning about this Japan Rail Pass. I am very interested in purchasing one for my trip, but will I still have time? How long does it usually take to get the actual pass? I want to order it now but want to make sure I will get it before I leave.

Thanks

Hi there!

It very much depends on where in the world you live, but I should think 10 days will give you more than enough time. You can check our normal delivery times for your country online. Please note that we also require 1 working day for processing.

While we cannot guarantee delivery times once your order has been dispatched, we use Fedex who are usually extremely efficient and prompt. As we dispatch using a signed-for and tracked service, please also note that someone should be available to sign for your order on delivery.

Hope this helps!

2488 State St. San Leandro CA 94577 is where I will be sending it.

I also have another question of you can answer. My sister who I am visiting in Japan told me not to purchase a JRP because I won't be using the trains a lot. She is stationed at Misawa AFB and will be having a baby so I will be helping her but sometime within the two weeks I will be visiting Tokyo. If I calculated correctly it would be cheaper to buy a JRP than just buying a ticket everytime I need to travel somewhere. Here is my itinerary...

From Narita airport I will have to take a train to the Tokyo station, where I will then board the Shinkansen and to towards Aomori, but get off at Hachinohe where my sister will pick me up. I believe that round trip alone will cost $350 USD. Now if I want to take a day and go to Tokyo I will have to make that round trip again. So roughly that would be about $700 USD where if I buy a JRP it would only be $580 for 14 days.

Would it be cheaper to just purchase the JRP? I think so but my sister is telling me otherwise.

Thanks.

Hi there,

For a 14 day rail pass to be worth it, you'll need to spend over ¥45,100 on individual tickets. Lets take a look at the price of individual tickets on the route you've told me:

  1. Narita airport terminal 1 > Hachinohe: ¥17530, (289mins, 711km)
  2. Hachinohe > Tokyo: ¥15350, (182mins, 631km)
  3. Tokyo > Hachinohe: ¥15350, (178mins, 631km)
  4. Hachinohe > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥17530, (261mins, 711km)

TOTAL: ¥65760 for 4 legs

As the total price of the tickets is much more than the 14 day rail pass, I recommend you buy the 14 day rail pass. In addition to cheaper travel you'll also have a lot of freedom to travel around to other parts of Japan if you wish.

Hope this helps!
