How to best travel around Kansai area and Tokyo area

Hi,

I will be visiting Japan from 23 May 2015 to 2 June 2015 and will be covering the following areas:

23/5 - 26/5: Osaka + Nara
26/5 - 28/5: Kyoto
28/5 - 2/6: Tokyo/Hakone

I will be flying in to Osaka on 23 May, and flying out from Tokyo on 2 June. As I will be in Japan for more than 7 days, and covering a few areas, I have some problems deciding which train passes to get and how best to use them.

  1. Is it advisable to get the 7 day JR Pass? If so, then which other pass should I get for the remaining few days?

  2. Another option I was considering was buying the JR Kansai Pass for 4 days. Again, I'm not sure what to do for the rest of the days.

  3. How should I travel from Kyoto to Kakone and then from Hakone to Tokyo if I want to stay in Hakone for one night?

Really appreciate your help.

Thank you.

Hi,
A 7 day JR Pass would not pay off for you with your plans. Using regional passes as you mentioned makes more sense. A JR Kansai Area Pass or a JR Kansai Wide Area Pass would serve you well, depending on how far and fast you want to go (for example, to see Himeji).
For getting from Kyoto to Hakone, please see here:

And be sure to click on "To/From Kyoto". Using a Hakone Free Pass would be a good way to get around and back to Tokyo.

Good luck.
