I will be taking the 7 day JR pass for my trip, activating on March 27 - April 2
Arriving Osaka (march 25)
Osaka - Kyoto (march 27)
Kyoto - Tokyo (March 29) ( will be taking Shinkansen and upgrade to Green car)
Tokyo - Narita (April 2) (is there first class?)

So I need to know if is it worth it to get the Green car pass or just get ordinary and upgrade on just one trip?

Hi Ann,

Interesting question!
If you want to use a Greenclass with the normal JR-Pass, then the basic fare is covered but you will have to pay the Greenclass seat fee. From Kyoto to Tokyo this would be ¥ 9,880.

The difference between a normal 7Day JR-Pass (28,300 Yen) and a 7Day JR Green Pass (37,800) is 10,500 Yen.
This makes the green pass a very interesting option, because for only 620 Yen more you will be traveling 1st class during your whole journey in Japan, including the Narita Express to and from Narita Airport.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel, that clears things up, so there is green class in Narita Express to.

I also understand that my trip from Osaka to Kyoto, I will have to just take the ordinary train instead of the Shinkansen as it is direct to Kyoto? (meaning just one train) If I want to take the Shinkansen then that is several change of train right?

My husband is taking the Delta airline flight to Narita arriving around 1pm, can you give me schedule on what he needs to take? going to Kyoto?

So upon arrival change voucher to JR pass , then reserve seat on green car via narita express, reserve seat in Shinkansen? May I know the time schedule he needs?

Thanks

Hi Ann,

You can travel from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka directly, which is the Shinkansen station for Osaka, from there it is a 4 minute local ride to Osaka station. See this link for reference. This link will also be useful for your husband, as the train leaves Narita Airport at 14.15 which should give him more than enough time to go trough customs, baggage collection and get the train tickets.

Once at Narita Airport you can exchange your JR-Pass and make reservations for the whole journey.

Let me know If you have more questions,
Daniel
