Dear Daniel-San,

i am reviewing the train schedules for my trip and I am a bit confused because I cannot find anymore in Hyperdia:

1.Matsumoto-Shiojiri-Nagiso.

I can only find Matsumoto - Kisofukushima-Nagiso or Matsumoto- Nakatsugawa-Nagiso. Would you know why?

  1. Is the limited express Koya covered by the JR?

3.And more generally, I suppose the train schedule changes on Saturday and Sunday...correct?

Kind regards,
Flo

Hi Flo,

1.) I checked the route for you in Hyperdia and was able to find it. Could you tell me what you are looking for? As in date/time and search options? This would allow me to check it better. You may also find this access map useful.

2.) The limited express Koya, is run by the Nankai railway company and does not accept the JR Pass.

3.) Yes train schedules can be different depending on the day. It is always good to search for the exact date when you wish to travel.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel San,

Many thanks for your help!

Regarding the first question I was wondering which route was better from Matsumoto to Nagiso by train.

Kind regards,
Rebecca

Hi again!

There is only one route by rail, although trains can differ. My advise would be to take a local train on the Chuo line, these are the most ecomonic and depart frequently. You could also take a limited express train if you have the JR Pass. These however don't depart that frequently.

Best wishes,
Daniel

Hi Daniel-San,

Thanks for your advice, I will definitely take the Chuo line.

I am still trying to figure out how much it would cost me with and without the JR pass for the following route:

1.Nagiso to Kyoto
2. Kyoto to Miyajimaguchi and then the ferry to the island.

Furthermore, I have heard that there is a special pass that goes from the Ferry in Miyajima to Hiroshima and that it covers the tramsways in Hiroshima as well. Maybe it would be good to take it on my return when I stop to Hiroshima: what do you think?

Many thanks for your great help and sorry if I ask so many questions....

Kind regards,
Rebecca

Oops I forgot route number 3:

From Miyajima island to Tokyo, by stopping at Hiroshima.

Cheers,
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,

Here are the normal ticket prices.

Nagiso - Kyoto ¥ 7,980
Kyoto - Miyajima guchi ¥ 11,210 + around 190yen for the ferry.
Miyajimaguchi - Tokyo ¥ 18,360, a stop at Hiroshima can be made for free.

The JR Pass will cover all of the above if you have one. I don't know exactly about the tram+ferry ticket but think it only helps if you make a return.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel-San,

I will definitely take the JR pass for 2 weeks!! Do you think I should book some trains in advance (can i do it from my country or must I wait to be in Japan) like those ones (because of Japanese holiday seasons):

25 December: Tokyo-Nagano: Shinkansen Asama

29 December: Nagiso-Kyoto: JR Chuo line and Kodama

5 January: Kyoto-Miyajimaguchi: Shinkansen Kodoma+Sakura+Sanyioline

6 January: Miyajimaguchi-Tokyo: JR Sanyoline+sakura

Thank you Daniel-San,

Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,

Trains can only be reserved once you are in Japan, this can however be done at any JR station and it will be easy.

I would advise reserving the tickets for travel around new year in advance, you will have enough time to do so, when done on the 25th.

Januari 5 and 6 will be much quieter and those could be left for later.

Happy travels!
Daniel
