questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

from haneda airport to kyoto

From Haneda Airport to Kyoto

Hi,

A group of us (6 pax) will arrive at Haneda Airport from Singapore about 10 pm and we want to reach Kyoto latest by noon the following day. What are the best options?

Is there any train service or shinkansen in operation pass midnight?
What is the earliest train or shinkansen available ?

Thanks
Shyan

I forgot to mention early, Our itinerary is :
Arrive Haneda airport on 9 Nov
Staying in Kyoto from 10 Nov - 14 Nov
Staying in Tokyo from 14 Nov - 20 Nov
Leaving Tokyo for Haneda Airport at 14:00 hr.

What is the best option? Shall we spend at Haneda airport nearby hotel?

Hello there,

It will not be possible to travel the same day to Kyoto if you arrive around 10 at Haneda.

My advise would be to stay at a hotel in Tokyo and travel on the following morning. The Shinkansen start service around 6 a.m. in the morning and travel to Kyoto takes 140-160 minutes. So you still arrive in time to enjoy breakfast in Kyoto.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi,
You can check rail schedules on Hyperdia.
Going to Kyoto and back nearly pays for the cost of the pass, but to put yourself over the top, you need a side trip or two. Going on a day trip to Himeji to see Japan's finest castle would do it, and it's well worth seeing. Don't miss out on seeing Nara either - it has some unforgettable places. You could also take a day trip to Nikko north of Tokyo.
And if you'd really like to reap some savings, go see Hiroshima/Miyajima for a night.

Best of luck.
