Economical way to travel within Japan

Hi
I'd be travelling with my family (2 adults and 1 child) to Japan end 2014. As i have limited budget, i cannot decide which rail pass wld be the "cheapest". Any advice or suggestions provided would be very much appreciated.

My itinery as follows:

At Nagoya, I'd be staying at Nagoya station.
At Osaka, I'd be staying at Osaka(Umeda) station

2 nights - Nagoya (Will be visiting Castle, Toyota museum, nabano sato, Nagoya port)
2 nights - Takayama
1 night - Nagoya
5 nights - Osaka (Besides places of interest in Osaka, I will be visiting Nara, Kyoto, Kobe while i base myself in Osaka)

Thanks for you time in reading my post.

Cheers

Hi there!

I'm a bit confused about your itinerary. Will you arrive at Nagoya or somewhere else? In addition from Osaka will you fly out from Kansai Airport? Could you please tell me the the answer to these question, this way I can give you the best advice regarding the JR Pass and/or other travel methods.

Hope to hear from you!

Hi Daniel
The below shows the sequence of my travel. Thanks a lot! :)

We FLY IN to Nagoya (NGO)

11-13 Dec >> 2 nights - Nagoya (Will be visiting Castle, Toyota museum, nabano sato, Nagoya port)
13-15 Dec >> 2 nights - Takayama
15-16 Dec >> 1 night - Nagoya
16-21 Dec >> 5 nights - Osaka (Besides places of interest in Osaka, I will be visiting Nara, Kyoto, Kobe while i base myself in Osaka)

We FLY OUT at Kansai.

Hi there!

Thank you, that makes things much clearer.
I checked your itinerary for the best option and I think that buying normal tickets is the most economical way.
Here's a quick breakdown of the most pricey tickets.

Nagoya - Takayama ¥ 11,740 (return)
Nagoya - Osaka ¥ 5,670

All travel within Kansai (Osaka/Nara/Kyoto) is between 500-700yen/ one way. All together it just would not up to enough to make a JR Pass economical.

Hope this helps!

Hi Daniel
Thanks a lot for your advice. When you say normal tickets, you are referring to SUICA stored value right, which allows me on most of the different company of transport?

1 last question and confirmation. I'm exploring my options :)

I believe the JR pass would be worth IF i were to

  • Fly in toTokyo (Haneda) - Hop on to a Shinkansen and make my way to Nagoya Stn.
  • The same as per the planned itinery
  • On last day, hop on to a Shinkansen at Shin-Osaka and make my way back to Tokyo (Haneda)

  • My reason for considering flying in and out from Tokyo is because the RETURN air tickets would cost less as compared to us flying in and out from different airports.

  • To take the shinkansen and see the different landscapes along the way from Tokyo to Nagoya ... hopefully to catch a glimpse of Mt Fuji?

Once again Thanks!!! :)

Hi Again!

With normal tickets I mean either normal tickets (as in paper tickets) or a Suica card, which you can also use to pay for your fares. Suica is very handy for this!

I checked ticket prices and I think that you would break about even with a 7 day JR Pass and probably make slight savings as a normal ticket Tokyo - Nagoya is ¥ 10,780. Remember that you get 7 days of unlimited travel with the JR Pass so basically any extra travel is what you save. I think it would be worth flying out of Tokyo if the ticket price difference is around 10,000yen.

Fuji-san is clearly visible from the Shinkansen on a good day, you can even stop at a Shinkansen station and shoot a couple of pictures. Do be sure to ask a seat number with C or D as these are on the Fuji side of the train.

Hope this helps!
