Hi....
I've already purchased the rail pass for my trip in April, but please can you tell me with the JR pass ,can I board a train by just using the pass,or do I still need to get a train ticket from a ticket office, for all routes including Shinkansen and the Monorail etc ?

Also I don't arrive in Tokyo until midnight, & unfortunately the JR offices will be closed, can you please recommend where I can activate the pass in Tokyo?

Any help is much appreciated..... Thank you

Hi there,

With the JR Pass you can take any train that has unreserved seats, just hop and and ready you go.

However you may also like to make seat reservations, in this case you do get an seat reservation ticket for a JR ticket office. Seat reservations are free with the JR Pass, more information is here.

Note that the Narita Express and JR Hayabusa trains both need a reservations beforehand.

You can activate the JR Pass at any of the major stations in Tokyo the following morning.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
