Do I need a JR Pass? How about Shinkasen from Hakodate to Tokyo?

My family of 5 would like to travel to Hokkaido and staying at these places at 3 nights each: Sapporo, Rusutsu, Noboribetsu and Hakodate. Should we buy the JR Pass?

Thereafter we are thinking of riding the Shinkasen from Hakodate to Tokyo. Is it a good idea to do that? How long would the Shinkasen ride take, how much per person and how do we book?

Thank you for answering my questions.

Hi there,

I think the best option would be to buy normal tickets here. A 7 day JR Pass would be perfect if used for the trip from Sapporo - Tokyo but you will be spending a good amount of time in each city, which makes a JR Pass lose some of its value.

For ticket prices and travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
