Delaying getting pass okay?

Hi there, I will be going to Japan for 11 days. The following is my itinerary:

10/17: Arrive in Nagoya
10/19: Head to Takayama
10/21: Head to Kanazawa
10/23: Head to Kyoto
10/24: Head to Hiroshima/Miyajima
10/25: Return to Kyoto
10/27: Return to US

As you can see, most of my travel is going to be during the seven days between the 19th and the 25th. If I get a 7-day rail pass, it will cover those days, but looking at the locations of the Exchange offices I can use, I would have to do it at Nagoya Station, and the station office does not open until 1000, and I would want to leave at 0700. If I go on the 18th to activate my rail pass, but use it on the 19th, will it cover my travel to the 25th, or will it end on the 24th?

I guess what I'm trying to say, is if I order it to start on the 19th, can I still pick it up on the 18th, since I will want to leave before the exchange office opens on the 19th?

Hi there,

I think that I got good news for you. You can select a date when you want to start using the JR Pass once you exchange it. In other words, you don't have to start using it right away. You can select a date up to 30 days ahead. So you can exchange your JR Pass on the 18th and say that you want to start using it on the 19th.

Also good to know may be that you can exchange your JR Pass at Nagoya station between 6:00 - 23:00. Between 6:00-10:00, 19:00-23:00 you can do so at the Ticket Office and between 10:00-19:00 at the JAPAN RAIL PASS Exchange Office.

In other-words you are good to go!

Lastly, do keep in mind that the JR Pass is counted in days (and not hours) the first day is counted as a full do no matter what time you start using it. So your JR Pass would expire on the 24th if you start using it on the 18th.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
