I'll be in Japan for three weeks in June... I just need to know if I have to buy a one week or a two weeks pass for my journey... I'll land in Narita, and I'll stay a full week in Tokyo, where I'll probably go to Mt Fuji and Hakone. And I'll head to Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima - let's say June 10 to June 17. Then, I'll probably fly to Okinawa and back to Tokyo and fly back to Canada, leaving from Narita. So, 1 week or 2 week?

Thanks for your help!

Hi there,

Based on you staying in Tokyo for 1 whole week when you arrive, I think I'd only look at the 7 day Japan Rail Pass option. For Hakone you can investigate the 2 day Hakone Free Pass which will includes all travel from Tokyo for ¥5000.

As the 7 day pass is ¥28,300, you'll need to spend more than that on individual tickets to make one worthwhile. Here's the cost breakdown of your tickets:

  1. Tokyo > Osaka: ¥13750, (194mins, 556km)
  2. Osaka > Kyoto: ¥540, (29mins, 42km)
  3. Kyoto > Hiroshima: ¥10790, (112mins, 380km)

TOTAL: ¥25080 for 3 legs

As you can see, the costs of individual tickets comes in lower than the cost of the 7 day rail pass. Unless you include more travel during this second period of travel (or returned to Tokyo by bullet rather than going to Okinawa) I think the most economic way of travelling will be using individual JR tickets as needed.

Hope this helps!
