I am in Yokohama at the Intercontinental. I have three rail pass exchange orders I got from your company. My sons are flying into Narita on Friday (tomorrow) - about 8 pm.

I would like to leave here Friday around lunchtime; I need to exchange my order for a pass tomorrow to have 7 days (end next Thursday when we leave) and use it to get to Tokyo and airport.

  1. Can I exchange my son's passes - get their rail passes prior to them arriving in Japan?

  2. Where should I go to get my rail pass from here? I have a suitcase and computer bag - Can you tell me how to get to Conrad Hilton from here to drop off my bag, then how to get to airport to pick up my sons before their arrival?

  3. We will go back to Hilton - then to Kyoto on Sunday. What is easiest way from Hilton? I read the Shinagawa station is smaller and easier?

Thank you so much for your help!

Hello Anne,

Welcome back, how do you find Japan? Let's have a look at your questions.

1.) Your sons will have to be present (with their passport and visa) in order to exchange the JR Pass.

2.) You can either exchange your JR Pass at Yokohama or Shin-Yokohama stations. Your Hotel in Tokyo is close to Shinbashi station.. You can take the JR Tokaido Line directly there from Yokohama station.

3.) Either Shinagawa or Tokyo station. Both are completely fine.

Hope this helps!

Japan is wonderful! Everyone is friendly!

Thank you for your answers. I have another question to clarify.

We want to take the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto. Do we get that at Shinbashi station or another one?

Also coming back from Kyoto next Wednesday;.

We have tickets to see the Imperial Palace on Wednesday. What time should we leave Kyoto to get to Tokyo Imperial Palace on the bullet train - , what station to get off to see Palace, and can we store our luggage at the station? Where?

We also want to take the Narita Express from the same station to the airport Wednesday afternoon after the tour.

Thank you so much for your help!

That's good to hear! It's one of the reasons I enjoy going Japan a lot too!

Shinkansen depart from Shinagawa and Tokyo station. Shinbashi is right in between them and it is easy to take a local train to either one of them. Good to know is that Shinbashi sometimes is written as Shimbashi as well.

Visiting the Imperial Palace is easy, it's within 10min walk from Tokyo station. Take the Shinkansen directly from Kyoto to Tokyo station. The trip is takes about 160min so I would recommend departing around 10 or so if you wish to be in Tokyo for the rest of the day. Tokyo station has different luggage facilities, including a cloakroom and coin lockers.

Same for the Narita Express which departs every 30min from Tokyo station.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
