Is seat reservation compulsory. If so, does this involve an additional charge for JR Rail Pass holders ?

Hi there,

Seat reservations are free of charge with the JR Pass. Most trains have also unreserved seats which you can take at any time.

That said, seat reservations are way more convenient. Both because you are secure of seating and don:t have to line up on the platform before the train comes.

The Narita Express and Hayabusa Shinkansen, in addion to all Green Class (1st Class) seats are by reservations only.
