Choosing the right pass

I will be travelling to Japan for approximately 12 days in April.

I wil begin by travelling from Narita to Yokohama on my first day (Friday morning). Then I will be travelling around the Tokyo and Yokohama area for the weekend. On the first Monday I will travel to Sendai. I will have some days just in Sendai, but expect to spend other days travelling on day trips north and south until my final day when I will travel back from Sendai to Tokyo and finally back to Narita for my flight home in the evening of the last Tuesday.

My question is...which pass is best for me. I note in your coditions that you can only purchase one pass, yet in your answers I see you tell people that it is ok to purchase multiple passes.

Is it possible to purchase a JR East 4 day flexible pass and then a 3 day flexible pass? Or would it just be easier to purchase a 14 day overall pass?

Hi there,

Here are some answers:

My question is...which pass is best for me

It very much depends on your other travel. If you intend to stay within the JR-East area (north eastern Honshu/Tohoku) then I recommend you investigate the JR-East series of passes which can be bought in Japan on arrival. If you intend to travel south from Tokyo to Kyoto, Osaka etc for instance, then I recommend you look at a 7 day rail pass, perhaps supplemented with an east pass for your initial travel.

Yes - you can purchase as many rail passes as you like provided you use them within the validity periods. Could you post the link to where you saw different information to this and I will make sure it's updated (I checked the terms and conditions but couldn't see it).

Yes this is a good option depending on your plans. If you intend to go outside the JR-East network, I think I'd advise investigating the 14 day or 7 day whole country options.

Hope this helps!
