Hi there,

Will be going to Japan next month and its my 1st time there! While researching I came across the Japan Rail Pass and was wondering if it would be a good match for my itinerary.

I will arrive at Narita Airport
Then travel to Tokyo for 3 days (visit Shinjuku, Asakusa, Ginza and Shibuya).
After I would like to experience a Ryokan in Hakone, looking at staying near Lake Yamanako.
From there I would like to visit Kyoto for 3 days ans Hiroshima for 2 days (1 night) before returning to Tokyo for 2 days, from where I will fly out again.

Any other recommendation are welcome too!

Kind regards,
Michael R.

Hi there,

All your itinerary is covered expect Asakusa and Ginza. Can be used Otsuki JR station for the Lake Yamanako. The most important part is using your JR pass for Kyoto- Hiroshima- Tokyo as these are the most expensive travel in your destinations. I think your destinations sounds great!

I hope this helps,
Tomomi

Hi Tomomi,

Thanks for the fast reply. Can you comment on what kind of JR Pass would suit my itinerary best? I am thinking of a 14 day JR Pass.

Also you say that travel to Asakusa and Ginza is not included, what would you recommend me for visiting those?

Thanks again!
Michael

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your reply.

I calculated your total cost. For your itinerary, a 14 days JR pass 46,390 JPY will be cost effective choice. With 14 days pass, you can save 7,930 JPY.

  • Narita airport to Tokyo return trip 6,440 JPY (single trip 3,220 JPY)
  • Tokyo to Shinjuku 200 JPY
  • Shinjuku to Shibuya 160 JPY
  • Shibuya to Tokyo 200 JPY
  • Tokyo to Otsuki 3,140 JPY
  • Otsuki to Kyoto 14,530 JPY
  • Kyoto to Hiroshima 11,090 JPY
  • Hiroshima to Tokyo 18,560 JPY

For Ginza and Asakusa, can be purchased single/ individual tickets for Tokyo Metro in Tokyo.

I hope this helps,
Tomomi

I believe there is a 50% discount from Narita to City. No sure discount is still in force
