questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

can i use jr pass to go everywhere around kyoto?

Can I use JR pass to go everywhere around Kyoto?

I am going to visit Japan from the 6th to 21st March.
My "current" travel plan is as below

7th March - Arrive at Tokyo Narita Airport - use the NEX train to my hotel in Tokyo
from 7th to 12 March: using Tokyo Metro to go travel around the city
12th March: travel to Kawaguchiko by bus
12th-15th March: hiring a car to visit Mt Fuji, Hakone, etc.
15th March: Activate a 7 days JR pass , and use the pass to
- go from Kawaguchiko Station to Kyoto - visit Osaka, Himeji, Hikone, Kinosaki Onsee etc. - go to Kansai Airport on the 21th March for departure back to Australia.

I wonder should I buy a 14 days JR pass or stick with my current plan (7 days JR pass).
Thanks for your advice.

Hello there,

The JR Pass does cover travel between all the places you wish to visit with it. Only travel from Kawaguchiko is where you would need other transport, such as a bus before boarding the train.

I think a 7 day JR Pass would be the better option since travel around Fuhji is mostly done by other transport means.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank for your reply, Daniel.
Do you know the name of the nearest train station from Kawaguchiko that I can board a JR train to Kyoto?
Until now I think that I can use the JR pass to travel from Kawaguchiko to Tokyo and then from Tokyo to Kyoto. .

Hi again,

The closest station is Otsuki, you can get there from Kawaguchiko station using the Fujikyu line. From Otsuki take a local train to Tokyo and a Shinkansen from there to Kyoto.

Hi again!

Yes the best way is to return to Tokyo station and then travel on the Kyoto.
