I arrive at narita on the 22nd March. I want to be on the same train my friends are on the 23rd. Which is tokyo to kyoto. I understand i have to exchange my ticket. Is it possible to book this journey. I'm worried it maybe be fully booked.

Hi there!

Unfortunately Japan Rail Pass holders are unable to book seats on JR-West and JR-Central services before they arrive in Japan and exchange/activate their Rail Pass.

I recommend that you exchange immediately on arrival into Japan, specifying you want the first day of use to be the following day (23rd). At the same time you can book your seat on the train you wish to use.

Please note that in general the Hikari bullet trains you will be using have ample seating, so your seat reservation should not be a problem. In the unlikely event that the train is full, you will certainly be able to use the non-reserved seating areas.

Hope this helps put your mind at ease!
