Buy JR Pass? Green vs. Ordinary

Hi,

I will in Japan from Tuesday 4/26 to Saturday 4/30 -- the likely itinerary is at the bottom. I have two questions:

  1. Should I buy a JR Pass or buy individual tickets? I think the pass is a better option, but would like opinions.
  2. Should I get a pass for the green car or for an ordinary car? My concern is primarily on the trip from Hiroshima to Tokyo.

Thanks for the input.

Likely itinerary:

4/26 - Arrive KIX ~6:30am
4/26 - travel to Himeji
4/26 - travel to Hiroshima / Miyajima
4/27 - travel to Tokyo (is Green Car useful on this journey)
4/28-29 - move around Tokyo (using combination of Yamanote line and metro)
4/20 - take Narita Express at about 7:30am (is Green Car useful -- it is the first day of Golden Week)

Hello there,

Looking at ticket prices, a JR Pass is well worth considering.

4/26 - travel to Himeji:¥ 5,800
4/26 - travel to Hiroshima ¥ 8,290
Day trip to Miyajima ¥ 1,180 for return
4/27 - travel to Tokyo (is Green Car useful on this journey) ¥ 18,560

For a total of ¥ 33,830 or at least ¥ 4,720 in savings, as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110. Plus the JR Pass can also be used on the local JR lines in Tokyo such as the JR Yamanote line and Narita Express.

Green Cars are a nice option if you prefer to travel in peace and quiet, most people are fine in normal class.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Daniel.

I think I will just get a green car pass -- for the peace of mind on the Hiroshima-Tokyo leg as well as on the Narita Express on the first day of Golden Week.

Thanks for your advice,
