Best Japan Rail tickets for us

We will be based in Osaka for two months and would like to travel to a few places in Japan eg Hiroshima, Tokyo, Nara, Kyoto and perhaps some other destinations. We would like to use the Shinkansen on some trips.

What would be the best rail ticket to get. We want to travel at different times over the 2 months rather than consecutive days.

Thanks

Hi there!

There's certainly a place for a JR Pass in your itinerary. Going to Hiroshima or Tokyo will allow for some good savings, especially since Shinkansen travel is included.

Being able to spend 2 months in Japan is absolutely great but finding the right pass may be a bit of a challenge because of this. JR Passes are available in 3 flavors, 7 Days, 14 Days and 21 days. Since you want to take your time you could for instance consider a two week pass and use it to cover most of your Shinkansen travel. An other option would be to go for 2 separate passes such as 2 times a 7 day JR Pass and use them at different times.

Either way the JR Pass offers a lot of flexibility.

I hope this helps!

Hi Daniel,

We are planning the following 7 day trip:-

Osaka - Toyko 2nd January
Tokyo - Hiroshima 5th January
Hiroshima - Osaka 8th January

Can we use the Shinkansen, either Nozomi or Mizuho?

Can our JR pass be used on the subway as well?

Thanks

Hi there,

Yes you can use the Shinkansen but the Nozomi and Mizuhou train times are not included. You can however use the Hikari and Sakura trains instead, which are just the same trains but only make a couple more stops on the way.

The JR Pass unfortunately is not valid on the metro or subway, however you can use the local JR network in both Tokyo and Osaka, which is enough to cover the bigger part of the city.
