Advice on using a 7-day pass with my itinerary (Tokyo, Osaka & Snow Monkeys)

Hi there,

I'm going on a 12 day trip to Japan with my girlfriend and we need a bit of help. We've purchased a 7-day JR Pass mainly to get us to Osaka and to Mt Fuji (doing an overnight stop here) and to use between Osaka and Kyoto as we intend to do a day trip to the surrounding areas/etc.

We have one problem and that is we want to visit Jigokudani monkey park (Snow Monkeys) but with our current plan, we couldn't use the JR Pass for that day and it would just be too expensive to go ($240AUD return from Tokyo station).

Our itinerary is as follows:

21st - Land in Tokyo
22nd - Tokyo
23rd - Day trip to Jigokudani
24th - ACTIVE JR PASS - Travel to Mt Fuji
25th - Mt Fuji - Osaka
(Between the 25th and 30th, we are using the JR pass to get around to places like Himeji, Nara, Kyoto, etc) 30th - Osaka to Tokyo
31st - Tokyo
1st (Feb) - Leave Tokyo

So as far as we understand, our JR pass would only work between the 24th-30th. Any advice on how we could get the most out of our JR pass would be great. If there is anyway we can activate it on the 23rd and minimise our costs elsewhere, that would be great.
Driving/renting a car is not an option as I couldn't get an IDP in time to use.

Hi there,

I think the best way to go about this is switch Fuji and Jigokudani around. As travel to Fuji is much more low cost compared to going up to Jigokudani. I am not sure how flexible you are in this regard? I would do a day trip on the 24th to Fuji, there are buses that cost as low as 1,400yen for one way to Fuji-Kawaguchiko.

Then do an other day trip to Jigokudani, you'd have to leave early though as it is a long trip. You could save some time by booking a hotel near Nagano and travelling on the following day to Kyoto/Osaka. This would be the most cost efficient way to include everything you want to see.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your advice. We decided that we would switch the day trip for the park to the 31st and activate the JR pass on the 25th of Jan so that its use would be from the 25th-31st. We will just pay for the trip to Mt Fuji as you said, since it is relatively inexpensive in comparison to either paying for the cost to the park, or paying for the bullet train from Osaka. Thanks for your advice :)

And just to confirm, a pass activated on the 25th would be valid through till 11.59pm on the 31st?
