Hi,

I'm going to Japan for 7 days this February. Will stay in Tokyo for four days and visit Kyoto for maybe two days before I fly out.

Can you give me advice on:

  1. Should I get a JR Pass since I want to experience traveling by Shinkansen for a return trip of Tokyo-Kyoto? I will be flying out from Tokyo.

  2. I read that the JR Pass may not be the best option to go around Kyoto. Will it still be worth my money?

  3. Can the JR Pass be good to go around Tokyo?

Thank you!

Hi there,

1.) A 7 day JR Pass would be worth considering if you can at least cover the return Tokyo - Kyoto with the pass. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is about the same as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen. Now you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price.

2 and 3.) Yes, I think so. Even if you would use it to cover travel to and from the airport, then you would already be making savings. You can also use the JR Pass on local lines in Tokyo and to some extent in Kyoto. You can see most of Tokyo using the JR Pass, although there are some exceptions like Asakusa and Odaiba. For instance, in Kyoto you can visit Arashiyama, Uji, Fushimi Inari or even make a visit to Nara using the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
