I'm going to travel to Japan this Nov total no of us is 8 person, I'm not sure whether to get a 7 or 14 days JR pass , or should I get a regional pass like Kansai Area pass (which is the most cost effective)? My itinerary as follow:

8/11 Arrive at Narita airport at 7am straight away process to Mt Fuji Hakone (will get a mt Fuji Round trip Tiket)

9/11 Hakone

10/11 Hakone to Tokyo

11 & 12/11 Tokyo

13/11 Tokyo to Toyoma (using Hakuriku Shinkansen to Kurobe-Unazukionsen Station)

14/11 Toyoma to Takayama (after having a Kurobe Gorge Train Ride)

15/11 Takayama - Shirakawago (join J hop Tour) and from Takayama to Kyoto

16,17 & 18/11 - Kyoto

19/11 Kyoto to Osaka

20/11 Osaka

21/11 Depart from Kansai Airport

And I also want to know does this Kansai Pass will cover the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Osaka or Nagoya, and can I use it to travel to Nara? Another question is when I reach Narita Airport how to process to Mt Fuji or Hakone.

Thanks

Hello YF Chai,

The most expensive bits are Tokyo - Toyama ¥ 12,730, Toyama - Takayama ¥ 3,360 and Takayama - Kyoto ¥ 9,960. Put together these do not add up to the cost of a JR Pass and therefor it is better to buy normal tickets as you travel.

A Kansai Pass does not cover the Shinkansen you can use the local train instead between Osaka and Kyoto, however this only costs 560yen and it is also cheaper here to just buy normal tickets.

Here's how to travel around hakone.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
