Hi
We are travelling to Japan in October and wondering if it is worth getting a JR pass and whether we should get the 9 or 7 day pass.
We will have 9 days in total, arriving in Tokyo and spending 3 days there, then hoping to head onto Mt Fuji, then Osaka (or Kyoto), Hiroshima and then back up to Tokyo. What would anyone recommend. Should we just get the 7 day pass and use a Tokyo subway pass whilst in Tokyo? We were also going to go to Miyajima Island and know that we can use the JR pass on the boat out to the Island
Thanks for your help

Hello there,

Yes the JR Pass will be great for your itinerary! Going to Hiroshima gives you very good value on out the JR Pass and you can use Hiroshima sightseeing bus and the ferry to Miyajima as well using the JR Pass.

Within Tokyo a Metro Day pass can be a good option if you plan on traveling a lot using the metro. An alternative is to use an IC card, which is a prepaid travel card that can be used to travel around Tokyo and other cities in Japan. It does not provide a discount by itself but is very convenient.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

awesome thanks I meant either 7 day or 14 day pass we are going for 9 days so wrote wrong number (sorry!) I think I will go with the 7 day pass and then use the 3 day subway pass for our time in Tokyo and just use the JR pass when we travel outside Tokyo.

Thanks for the info Osaka at night sounds great. We had Osaka down as we collect hard rock shot glasses!.
Not sure if we will have time or not but is there any little country town (not high tourist traffic) we could stop off at when we travel from Hiroshima back to Tokyo?

Is there a train from Narita or just the bus?

Hello again :)

There are plenty of trains going to Narita. The best run by JR is the Narita Express which is a limited express train traveling from most major stations in Tokyo directly to Narita Airport.

It's one of the most comfortable options but also costs more (generally around 3,000yen for one way).

Hope this helps too :)
Daniel
