questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

7 day pass

7 day pass

I am planning a trip to Japan in September and will make the following trips by train within the 7 day limit

Haneda to kyoto via Tokyo
Kyoto- Nara - Kyoto
Kyoto - Hakone (I understand this has to be via Yokohama, is this correct?)
Hakone-Tokyo
Tokyo - Tsukuba
Please advise if all these trips are covered by the 7 day pass
Does the JR rail pass cover the cable car, train and ferry within the Hakone area?

Hi there,

The JR Pass does not cover local transport within Hakone, such as the Cable Car.

You can however use the bullet train directly from Tokyo station to Odawara with the JR Pass, no need to travel via Yokohama.

Also, you will want to use a bus to Tsukuba for easy access from Tokyo, unfortunately this is not covered by the JR Pass. Even so, you can make good savings using the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you for your reply
I will be travelling from Kyoto to Hakone........does the train go direct from Kyoto to Odawara?? or do I need to go via Tokyo as mentioned in your reply
I note that Tsukuba does have a railway station...is this not linked to Tokyo....and is this line covered by the JR Pass??

Hi DanielM,

Yes the train goes directly from Kyoto - Odawara (it is also directly on the route to Tokyo).

I think you are talking about the Tsukuba Express from Kita-Senju, this is a private line and not covered by the JR Pass. The fare is ¥1,030.
