Hi,
We are spending 2 weeks in Japan in October. We will spend the first 5 nights in Tokyo, visiting friends in Yokohama one day and possibly doing a day trip to Nikko or Hakone. Then we will travel Japan for 8 days. The first leg of the trip is from Tokyo to Kanazawa, then Kanazawa to Takayama, then Takayama to Kyoto. On the 8th day we will travel from Kyoto back to Yokohama (leaving from Haneda the next day).
Should we buy the 7 day pass plus a separate ticket for the first or last leg of the trip, or will the travels in and around Tokyo make it worth buying the 14 day pass?
Thanks for your help!

Hi there,

I would use a 14 day JR Pass instead of buying normal tickets + a 7 day JR Pass. Basically the one ticket you would buy for Tokyo - Kanazawa is more expansive than upgrading from a 7 day to a 14 day JR Pass.

With a 14 day JR Pass I do recommend making the side trips to Nikko and possible Hakone too, to get both the best out of your trip to Japan and the JR Pass.

Alternatively you could visit Hiroshima as a day trip from Kyoto. Its also one of the main places I recommend anyone to visit.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
