questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

21 days jr pass

21 days JR pass

Hi,

I will be traveling to Japan next week for 22 days, from 7-28 April from Fukuoka-Nagasaki(2 night), nagasaki-Hiroshima( 1 night), hiroshima to Osaka/Kyoto ( 6days), Kyoto-takayama(2 days), takayama-Kanazawa(1 day), kanazawa - tokyo 5 days then depart to hokkaido for 4 days. Advisable to purchase 21 days pass? In Tokyo, I intend to travel to Hakone, Tateyama kurobe alpine route, kamakura. looking forward for your reply soon. Thank you in advance.

You easily make a 2 week pass pay off for the fist 14 days of your trip, and with a side trip from Tokyo for example to Nikko you'd make a 21 day pass pay off, but a few issues.
First, why go from Kanazawa to Tokyo and then backtrack to take the Tateyama kurobe alpine route? Why not just go from Kanazawa to Toyama?
Secondly, what airport are you leaving Japan from? Sapporo or Tokyo? Why kill yourself by taking a train from Tokyo to Hokkaido? It's over 9 hours from Tokyo to Sapporo, killing a while day. Or about 5½ just to Hakkodate, but that's still a long ride. You might consider getting a 2 week pass and then flying to Hokkaido from Tokyo. You can fly very cheaply these days with a low cost carrier like Jet Star for as low as ¥4,190 and get there in about 2 hours. Another option is ANA's Experience Japan Fare. In Hokkaido it depends on where you plan to travel of course. You could be using a 3 week JR Pass, pay regular fare after a 2 week JR Pass, or use a Hokkaido Rail Pass.
Starting from the south, both Fukuoka and Nagasaki have some great sightseeing. In Fukuoka don't miss the Nanzoin Temple and try the Hakata Ramen at the Nakasu Yatai Stalls. You can get some good sightseeing info here, and see:

For the Kansai area, don't miss seeing Himeji and Nara. For the Tokyo area, take some day trips also to see Nikko.

Hi,
Thank you for the prompt response!
I didn't notice I can go to Toyama from Kanazawa, and I have booked my stay at Tokyo after Kanazawa. With my luggage I think I will go on with Tokyo-Tateyama kurobe alpine route then. The information you provided above definitely helps other travelers during their planning!
I m traveling from Tokyo to Sapporo by domestic flight on 24 April n continue the trip at hokkaido.
So, If I start using my JR pass upon arrival to Fukuoka on 7 April around 3pm, and it will be valid till 27 apr. Subsequently the evening on 27 apr and departure to Sapporo airport with JR regular fare. Is ok?
Thanks for the recommendations also!

Hello,
If you start your 21 day JR pass on April 7th it will be valid until midnight April 27th. So you can use it on a JR train to go to the airport.

Hi,
Would you know any luggage storage at Toyama station? I am considering to go for Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route before heading to Tokyo..

Looking forward for your reply soon, and thank you in advance!

There are lockers in nearly every main train station. The thing is, going through the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route is a one-way travel - you don't end up in the same place, unless you want to use up a huge amount of time backtracking.
