Hello! My husband, in-laws and I are coming to Japan in September for 12 days - we've bought the 14 days Rail Pass (+ pocket wifi) already but I'm a little confused since I've heard that we cannot bring luggage on most of the trains (except I did just read here the train from Narita into Tokyo has special cars for the luggage etc.). We're traveling from Narita into Tokyo, then Tokyo to Hiroshima, then Hiroshima to Osaka, then Osaka to Kyoto then finally Kyoto back to Narita. Can you please give me some clarification of the types of trains and if there will be room for our luggage on each one/each leg of travel we take. Thank you in advance!

Hi there,

You can bring luggage on trains no problem! The official guidelines for luggage on JR trains is as follows:

You may bring up to two pieces of baggage on board free of charge. For each bag the total of the length, width and height must not exceed 250 centimeters, the length must not exceed two meters and the weight must be no more than 30 kilograms.

Looking at the luggage you plan to bring, I don't think you have anything to worry about :)

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you! Why have people told us that you can't take luggage on the bullet trains? Was that just mis-information?

I think that is indeed a misunderstanding.

You are fine bringing a Suitcase on board.
