We are trying to decide if we should get the JR pass. We are there 17 days.
This is our tentative itenirary. We are staying part of the time with a friend in Kanagawa.
We have travels covered from Narita to Kanagawa. We are hanging out in Kanagawa the first 3days. Then we can start using the 14 day JR pass.

Day 1-3
Kanagawa to Tokyo
Take subway around the city
Tokyo to Kanagawa
Day 4
Kanagawa to kamakura
Kamakura to Kanagawa
Day 5-7
Kanagawa to Kyoto
Kyoto to Nara
Nara to Osaka
Day 8-10
Osaka to Okayama
Okayama to Hiroshima
Day 11-14
Hiroshima to Kanagawa
Kanagawa to narita

Thanks,
Micah

Hi Micah,

To find out if a JR Pass would be useful, here's a list with ticket prices.

Kanagawa - Kamakura ¥330 (+130¥ on the Keikyu line).
Kamakura - Kanagawa ¥330 (+130 same as above).
Kanagawa - Kyoto ¥ 13,230 (from Yokahama).
Kyoto - Nara ¥ 690
Nara - Osaka ¥ 780
Osaka - Okayama ¥ 5,660
Oksayama - Hiroshima ¥ 5,660
Hiroshima - Kanagawa ¥ 17,540
Kanagawa - Narita Airport ¥ 3,980

For a total of ¥ 42,540, this means you are still a little short of the price of a 14-day JR Pass. So it may be better to buy ticket as you go for now. However just a small day trip may already be enough for the JR Pass to pay off. For the rest nice itinerary. When you are in Hiroshima, don't forget to visit Miyajima.

Enjoy Japan!
-Daniel
