questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

15 days japan 7 days jrpass?

15 days Japan 7 days JRPass?

Hi there,

My husband and I are going to Japan in September. We would like to check whether our itinerary is feasible for 15 days and also whether a 7days rail pass is sufficient to cover our travel?

Day 1 arrive in Tokyo
Day 2-4 Tokyo
Day 5 Tokyo - Nikko
Day 6 Nikko - Tokyo
Day 7 Tokyo - Hakone
Day 8 Hakone - Kyoto
Day 9 Kyoto-Nara-Kyoto
Day 10 Kyoto - Arashiyama - Kyoto
Day 11-13 Kyoto
Day 14 Kyoto - Osaka
Day 15 flying home from Osaka

We are planning to start using the JRPass from Day 5 when we travel to Nikko? But not so sure whether it's better to travel with JR or private railways?

And also how can we reserve the seat by using an ordinary JRPass? Can we reserve it on the day of travelling?

Thank you for taking your time reading the questions.

Hi Danielle,

You could certainly consider a 7 day JR Pass for your travel and I also think it would be the best when you start using it when you travel to Nikko. Traveling with the JR to Nikko is certainly the best, part of the ride is done on the high speed Shinkansen and it's a lot faster than other train lines.

As for seat reservations, you may make them at any time when the JR Pass is valid. To do so, go to any JR Station, there show your JR Pass and tell the staff when and where you wish to travel. The JR Staff will then find the best route for you and reserve your seats. Completely for free :)

Hope this helps!
