Hi,

I am travelling with some friends to japan in July. Our itinerary is like this:

3 July - 7 July (5 days) in Tokyo
8 July - 9 July (2 days) in Takayama
10 July - 11 July (2 days) in Hiroshima/Miyajima
12 July - 17 July (5 days) in Kyoto

We are staying in the Kuramae area in Tokyo.

We are unsure whether it would be a good idea to get the 7 day JR pass and use it from 8 July onwards when we go to takayama because we can use a suica card in Tokyo where we will be able to use tokyo metro lines as well. Also my friend was telling me that transport in Kyoto is mainly buses so the JR pass isn't really used there.

Or would it be a better idea to get the 14 day JR pass?

Please help :)

Hello there,

Welcome to the forum, it is always good to have your itinerary checked before purchasing a JR Pass. I think that the 7 day JR pass would be the best option for you.
I've made a little list of ticket prices below to give you an idea of possible savings with the JR Pass.

Tokyo - Takayama ¥ 14,710
Takayama - Hiroshima ¥ 17,890
Hiroshima - Miyajima (return, inc ferry) ¥ 1,180
Hiroshima - Kyoto ¥ 11,090

For a total of ¥ 44,870 or ¥ 15,760 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110. So a JR Pass would be well worth it. In Tokyo (and later on in Kyoto), I would recommend using a Suica card. This is by far the most convenient way of getting about the city.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
