14days-Osaka,Kyoto,Hakone,Tokyo- need how many days of JR pass

Hi,

First time to Japan, thus would appreciate for some guidance on how days of JR pass should I purchase for 2adults and 1 child. These will be my main destinations but I realized some of the places do not need so many days, thus we might travel out to other places.

Day 1 - Osaka
Day 2 - Osaka
Day 3 - Kyoto
Day 4 - Kyoto/Nara
Day 5 - Kyoto
Day 6 - Hakone
Day 7 - Hakone
Day 8 - Hakone
Day 9 - Yokohama
Day 10 - Tokyo
Day 11- Tokyo
Day 12 - Tokyo
Day 13 - Tokyo

Thanks.

Hi there,

So far your itinerary looks good, I would spend maybe 2 days in Hakone but that is the only thing I'd change.

As a but of general advice, learn to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route and time table for train travel in Japan.

As for the JR Pass, for now I would recommend buying normal tickets. A 7 day JR Pass is quickly a good option when used for a return Osaka - Tokyo, so far it looks like you will me travelling one way with different stops directly on the route.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your advice.

I'm will be flying directly to Kansai and flying off from Toyko.
So for this route, when do I need to activate my JR Pass?

Pardon me, once activate the JR pass, we need to use consecutive for 7 days right?

I will visiting USS on Day 2 and while in Hakone we will go Mt Fuji. Will it be better to go Mt Fuji from Tokyo?

Because we are traveling with kid, thus we prefer to unload our luggage in hotel first before moving out to sightseeing.

Best Regards,
Sharon

Hi Sharon,

With arrival at Kansai Airport, it will be cheaper to buy normal rail tickets for your trip.

If you do get a JR Pass, then it is used for a consecutive period of time.

Fuji-san is best visited as a day trip from Tokyo, there are different options on how and where to visit Fuji and generally different railway companies are required, thus its nice not to have to carry luggage all the time. It is also possible to reach places like Kawaguchiko around Fuji by express bus from Tokyo.

Hope this helps too!
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

As per your advice, I had tried planning the trips with Hyperdia. It is very useful and at the same time quite confusing though.

My travel dates are nearer now, getting more excited, thus would like to confirm with your advice again in regards to the JR pass.

Based on my travel route, I do not need to buy JR pass at all? Does the normal tickets easily available, confirmed seats? I read that the best is to get Green seats so that we can ensure that the whole family can sit together and also more comfy.

Best regards,
Sharon

Hi Sharon,

My advise remains the same (unless your plans have changed).

Planning is part of the fun!
