Hello,
We (family of 4) arrive in Kyoto on 14/8, and travel to Osaka; Hiroshima, Miyajima, Naoshima, Kanazawa, Takayama, Hakone, and Tokyo.
We arrive in Tokyo on 26/8, and stay until 31/8.
I think we should take a Japan Rail pass for 14 days, and not 21 days, because the last days we will visit Tokyo, so we will not use the JR pass ( metro is not included in the JRpass, I think), except for the last day to take the train to Narita Aiport.
Am I correct, or is it better to take the 21 day pass?
Would you recommend first class or not for a family?
Thank you very much for your much appreciated answer.
Kind regards.

Hi there,

That's a lovely itinerary, especially if you travel with your family. The 14 day JR Pass would be the best option if you can use it for all your travel up to Tokyo. The JR Pass can also be used for local travel on the JR within Tokyo - this is as good as the metro. However the JR Pass is beter used for longer distances as travel within Tokyo is rather cheap (130-200yen a ride).

As for Green Class (1st Class) I think that you will be perfectly fine in ordinary class. Which is already very nice. Having to buy Green Passes for the entire family may just be a little overboard.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
