Hi, we (2 Adults, 1 child) plan to spend 14 days in Japan from 28/1/16 to 10/2/16. Would like to seek your advise whether is worthwhile to purchase 7 days JR Pass and use in our planned itinerary.

  1. Is JR Pass can only purchase online? Can we purchase over counter when arrived Narita airport?

  2. Our arrival in Narita airport 28/1/16 around 4.30pm and we wish to travel from Narita to Osaka. Where can we activate JR Pass and how do we use JR Pass to travel to Osaka? Will it be very late when arriving Osaka?

  3. Do we still need to purchase Narita Express ticket and Suica card?

  4. Our planned itinerary (6Nights in Osaka, 7Nights in Tokyo) as follow. Can we fully make use JR Pass to take Shinkansen on our first 7 days travel between Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kobe and Kyoto?

  5. Can please comments or give suggestions to our below planned itinerary?

Day1-Arrival Narita 4.30pm, travel to Osaka for stay in Osaka
Day2-Sightseeing in Osaka
Day3-Travel from Osaka to Nagoya for day trip. Return & stay in Osaka.
Day4-Travel from Osaka to Nagoya again for day trip. Return & stay in Osaka.
Day5-Travel from Osaka to Kyoto for day trip. Return & stay in Osaka.
Day6-Travel from Osaka to Kobe for day trip. Return & stay in Osaka.
Day7-Travel from Osaka to Tokyo (JR Pass expired). Stay in Tokyo
Day8-Travel from Tokyo to Mt Fuji for day trip. Return & stay in Tokyo.
Day9-Sightseeing & leisure in Tokyo
Day10-Travel from Tokyo to Hakone for day trip. Return & stay in Tokyo
Day11-Sightseeing & leisure in Tokyo
Day12-Tokyo Disneyland
Day13-Leisure in Tokyo
Day14-Depart Tokyo

  1. What would be the weather like in Tokyo during end January to early February? Is it a good time to visit Mt Fuji during my visit period? Is it still snowing in Mt Fuji or Kyoto?

We greatly appreciate your advice before we confirm our purchase. Thank you very much!

Hi there,

I see you have a series of questions, let's get started right away.

1.) The JR Pass can only be purchased outside of Japan. You can place on order online here if you like.

2.) You can activate the JR Pass at Narita Airport, here is how to activate the JR Pass at Narita Airport. Travel to Osaka takes about 5H, so it will be late when you arrive at your accommodation.

3.) No, the JR Pass covers the Narita Express.

4.) Yes, travel between all these cities is covered by the JR Pass.

5.) I see you plan to visit Fuji, there are many ways and areas to explore Fuji. Have a look at this page for the possibilities.. Its good that you plan to visit as a day trip from Fuji, this way you will have easy access.

6.) There's definitely a chance for snow and its smart to pack an extra layer of clothing. Fuji can be very beautiful on a clear day in winter, at the same time you may not see anything because of clouds.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
