Hi Daniel!

We are a family of four adults and will be travelling to Japan from the 10th January to the 22nd January 2016. We will reach Osaka first and ultimately end our trip in Tokyo.

We hope from Osaka we are able to travel to Kobe and
Hiroshima and move towards Kyoto on the 5th day. From Kyoto we plan to make a day trip to Nara as well. We will be
spending 3 nights in Kyoto before heading to Tokyo. The remaining 5 nights in Tokyo, we wish to visit Hakone and a few
other places. I wonder if Shirakawago is doable from Tokyo.

Is the 7day JR pass the best and most economical way to travel, with our tentative itinerary?

I would like to thank you in advance for all your help and
suggestions. Appreciate your time and assistance.

Hi Wiz,

I reviewed your itinerary and a 7 day JR Pass would certainly be the best option.

Just have a look at ticket prices:
Osaka - Hiroshima ¥ 10,230
Hiroshima - Osaka ¥ 10,230
Osaka - Kyoto ¥ 560
Kyoto - Osaka ¥ 13,600

For a total of ¥ 34,620 or ¥ 5,510 in savings, as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110. This is even excluding the visit to Kobe and local travel.

As for Shirakawago it is too far to travel there from Tokyo in a day. If you would like to visit it, consider traveling to Kanazawa from Kyoto or Osaka and from there make a day trip to Shirakawago.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Heartfelt thanks Daniel! Just ignore the other entry I posted a few minutes ago. I thought the first one did not get through.

Do you think it would have snowed in Shirakawago during that time of our travel? And does Jr pass cover the route to Shirakawago.

Thank you thank you thank you. You have been a great help.

Hi again!

We got a lot of posts the last day, so I am still backtracking a bit.

Shirakawago will most likely have snow by that time.

Does that help?
