Worth buying a 7 day pass???

My wife and I will be arriving in Tokyo on December 27th and staying through January 1st. At that time we go to Kyoto for 2 days then on to Osaka for 4 days before flying to Seoul. We plan to take the train from Narita to Shinjuku and then hopefully taking a day trip at some point while in Tokyo. We will use the train when traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto and then again when going from Kyoto to Osaka. Also, we are hoping to take a few daytrips by train from Osaka, possibly to Hiroshima and Okayama.

Do you recommend purchasing a rail pass? If so, do you recommend a pass to cover our entire trip or is it more economical to get a 7 day pass to just cover the train from Tokyo to Kyoto, Kyoto to Osaka, and the daytrips from Osaka.

Also, what is the difference between the regular pass and the first class pass?

Lastyly, is it necessary to get a pass where we can book trains in advance since we are going to be traveling around New Years?

Thank you in advance for all help!!

Hello there,

A JR Pass could possible help you make savings compared to buying normal tickets. Though it depends on where exactly you will travel, for instance, making a day trip to Hiroshima will quickly make the JR Pass pay off. However it is better to buy normal tickets if you stay locally in Osaka. I was also wondering if you are returning to Tokyo/Narita after Osaka or will fly out from there.

Here is more information on Green Class.

It is recommend to reserve seats in advance around new year, either 2-4 days is definitely needed. You can either do so with or without the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Daniel, thank you for the quick reply and the information.

Here is a list of the trains I will be taking and the dates, can you please take a look and let me know if you think a JR Pass would be beneficial?

December 27: Narita to Tokyo
December 29: Tokyo to Mt Fuji (specific location not yet known) and back to Tokyo the same day
January 1: Tokyo to Kyoto
January 3: Kyoto to Osaka
January 5: Osaka to Okayama and back to Osaka the same day

We are flying to Seoul from Osaka, so we will not need to go back to Tokyo.

Thanks again for your generous help.
