Hello,

I've been studying on the various rail passes (JR, Kintetsu, Kansai Thru) but I can't figure out which one is best for my itinerary. I'm planning to do the following:

Day 1: Arrive Kansai Int Airport and transfer to Osaka or Kyoto
Day 2: Sightseeing Kyoto (local transport only)
Day 3: Sightseeing Kyoto (local transport only)
Day 4: Kyoto to Nara, Nara to Mt Koya (sleep at Mt Koya)
Day 5: Mt Koya to Kii-Tanabe (by train or by bus?)
Day 6: Kii-Tanabe to Takijiri-Oji by bus (start Kumano Kodo hike)
Day 7: - (hiking)
Day 8: Kii-Tanabe or Shingu back to Kyoto

Could you maybe give me some advise on whether I should buy a JR Kansai railpas or maybe a Kansai Thru pass or would it be better to buy all tickets separately? Or maybe a combination of passes?

I know it's a bit of a complicated itinerary but any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Domingo

Hi Domingo,

I checked your itinerary for the best possible options and would recommend buying normal tickets for your travel. The area passes in the Kansai area are all limited different companies and require high amounts of travel in order to pay off.

Local travel within Kansai is not very expansive, so no worries there :)

You may find this guide for travel around Kii Tanabe useful as well.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
