questions & answers: itinerary check

which rail pass?

Which rail pass?

Hi,

I'm travelling with my partner to Japan in November and I just wanted to check that a 14 day JR pass is suitable for this 3 week itinerary (if we were to activate it on the 4th, when we leave Tokyo) or if any other ticket combination/pass is more economical?:

1st Nov Narita airport>Tokyo
4th Nov (activate rail pass?) Tokyo>Murodo on Tateyama Alpine Route
5th Nov Murodo>Kamikochi
9th Nov Kamikochi>Kyoto
13th Nov Kyoto>Naoshima Art Island
14th Nov Naoshima Art Island>Ominichi (cycling the Shimanami Kaido route and staying in Setoda)
15th Nov Setoda>Hiroshima
17th Nov Hiroshima>Kagoshima and ferry to Yakushima
21st Nov Flight from Yakushima to Haneda/Haneda>Tokyo
22nd Nov Tokyo>Narita airport

Many thanks for your advice and help!
Isabel

Hi Isabel,

I was looking at your itinerary for the best option(s). However what I was wondering about is whether you'll make the approach to the Alpine route via Toyama or Shinano-Omachi? Could you please let me know which you plan on taking, this way I could find the best option for you!

Hope to hear from you!
Daniel

It's a very cool itinerary and pretty unique too!

Hi Daniel,

Glad you like our itinerary! We were thinking of going to Murodo via Shinano-Omachi. We thought it was probably quickest that way, taking a direct train from Tokyo to Matsumoto and then travelling on from there.

Please let me know what you think

Thanks for all your help

Isabel

Hi Isabel,

Thank you for the clarification. Now let's have a look at ticket prices and see if the JR Pass would be a good buy.

Tokyo - Matsumoto ¥ 6,900
Murodo - Kamikochi, traveled on non-JR bus/transport
Kamikochi - Kyoto, travel to Takayama by bus from there rail to Kyoto ¥ 9,960
Kyoto - Uno for ferry to Naoshima ¥ 9,130
Setoda - Mainland with ferry, you could take the train from Sunami to Hiroshima ¥ 3,570
Hiroshima - Kagoshima ¥ 17,670

For a total of ¥ 47,230 the 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 46,390, meaning you could make small savings. However since I did not know the exact transport methods you, please see this as an estimate only.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
