unsure how to use jr pass

Unsure how to use JR pass

Hello -
We will arrive in NRT and go to Shinjuku, Tokyo for 6 nights in October. Following that we'll to travel to Kyoto and stay in a ryokan for 3 nights (not booked yet), Lastly, travel to Osaka for 3 nights (not booked yet). What sort of pass should we purchase? Suica package / JR pass (7 or 14 day). I am unsure how to use either and how to optimize our experience in Japan

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi there!

From Osaka will you be heading back to Tokyo for your flight home? If so, than the 7 JR Pass would be a very good option, as it will allow you to cover the return between Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka as well as use it for local travel. If you don't make the return, than I would look into buying single tickets.

As for getting to Tokyo from Narita Airport, consider buying a Suica + N'EX package, that will include a discounted trip into Tokyo and a Suica Card which you can use to travel all around Tokyo and other parts of Japan.

Hi Daniel-san, from Osaka we will leave from KIX. Does that mean we should not purchase the JR passes but rather purchase Suica + N'EX for the entire trip from Oct 4-16 (flying out morning of Oct 16 from KIX)? Then we'll purchase single bullet train from Shinkansen station from Tokyo to Kyoto? Do I purchase all these in the state or when I arrive in Japan?

Thank you for your support!

Hi Again!

Yes in that case I would ticket with a single Shinkansen ticket + the Suica + N'EX.
This way you have the best tickets for your trip. You can buy both of these at Narita Airport when you land, or buy the Shinkansen ticket later at any JR Station in Japan.

Have a great trip!
Daniel
