We are traveling to Tokyo on February 16, 2012 and arriving February 17, 2012. We plan to spend three nights in tokyo and 4 nights in Kyoto or possibly three nights in tokyo, two nights in Kyoto and two nights in Osaka and leaving from Osaka to the airport? What would the price be if we purchased the train fares individually versus a train rail pass?
What would be the individual round trip pass from Tokyo to Kyoto?

thank you,
Holly Baine

Hi Holly,

I have posted this above just now, but just in case, the 7 day Rail Pass will be cheaper than the ticket costs of your travel I think. You'll also be able to use the JR Pass on all the JR lines in Tokyo. For reference, here are your projected costs. Note I have assumed you'll leave from Tokyo airport, but if you leave from Osaka airport (it's not clear in your post), then the cost of the single from Osaka to Kansai Airport will be ¥3,340.

  1. Narita airport terminal 1 > Tokyo: ¥3,140 (62mins, 79km)
  2. Tokyo > Kyoto: ¥13,420 (164mins, 513km)
  3. Kyoto > Osaka: ¥540 (28mins, 42km)
  4. Osaka > Tokyo: ¥13,950 (194mins, 556km)
  5. Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥3,140 (58mins, 79km)

JR ticket cost: ¥34,190 for 5 legs

Hope this helps!
