Hi, I'm travelling to Japan for 16 days in July and have a very rough itinerary planned.

Would be grateful for advice on whether our proposed route is the most logical one. We will have a 3 year old and 1 year old with us. Also, will a JR pass limit us a lot if we cannot get the Nozomi or Mizuho Shinkansen trains? Finally, will it be cheaper to do this with a 7 day pass + pay extra for separate train trips? Or get a 14 day pass? Thank you for any advice!!!

Day 1 - Tokyo (arrive am)
Day 2 - Tokyo: day trip Nikko
Day 3 - Tokyo DisneyLand
Day 4 - Kyoto
Day 5 - Kyoto: day trip Nara
Day 6 - Kyoto to Hiroshima/Miyajami
Day 7 - Hiroshima to Fukuoka (visit relatives)
Day 8 - Fukuoka
Day 9 - Fukuoka
Day 10 - Fukuoka to Osaka
Day 11 - Osaka to Mt. Koya (1 or 2 nights best??)
Day 12 - Mt Koya?
Day 13 - Mt. Koyo back to Osaka (or can we go Mt Koyo direct to Tokyo???)
Day 14 - Osaka back to Tokyo
Day 15 - Tokyo
Day 16 - Tokyo

Hello there,

This is a very nice itinerary. Although Fukuoka is not a regular place to visit in tourist itineraries - it is an amazing place to spend a couple of days. It's like Tokyo but much more relaxed and the local Ramen taste delicious.

As for the JR Pass, definitely go for a 14 day JR Pass here. There's more than enough travel in here to get your monies worth and make very good savings over normal train tickets.

The JR Pass does not cover the Nozomi/Mizuhou trains but you can use other Shinkansen trains instead, such as the Hikari and Sakura Shinkansen. The only difference is that these trains make a couple more stops on the way.

I would advise one night at Koya, this will give you enough time to experience the local temples. From there I would spend a day or two in Osaka and then travel on to Tokyo. Traveling from Koya to Tokyo is quite a trip in one go, although certainly possible. Here is an example route.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
