Hi,

I will be landing at Haneda airport on 5/2 at 2230. I plan to spend May 3rd in Tokyo, then leave on the 4th.

My question is what is the best way to use my JRPass to get to the Shiba-sakura festival and continue to Kokura station on the same day?

From what I can gather, it looks like I can take Kodama 639 at 08:26 on May 4th and get off at Shin-Fuji station. From there I can take a local bus, but I'm not sure which one to take? It looks like there is a specific local bus for this event. This is the event I am talking about: http://www.shibazakura.jp/eng/

I plan to get back to Shin-Fuji station around 16:00, and take Kodama 665 at 16:12, get off at Nagoya, and then take Nozomi 47 and get off at Kokura station to see the Wisteria tunnel on May 5th.

I know it's a lot of train riding, but we're on a somewhat tight time schedule.

Any insight or problems with this itinerary, aside from it being Golden Week?

Hi there,

I am afraid this will be near impossible to day on a day and actually have enough time to enjoy the festival.

I would recommend visiting shiba-sakura as a day trip from Tokyo and then travel to Kokura on an other day. Its already 7 hours of travel from Tokyo - Kokura using the JR Pass. Adding travel to shiba-sakura festival will at least add an other 4 hours of travel.

Please note that the Nozomi Shinkansen is not included in the JR Pass and you would have to use the Hikari/Sakura Shinkansen to Kokura.

I really recommend reviewing your plans and re-planning where required.

Hi Daniel-san,

Thank you for the reply.

So, if I go to Kokura the next day from Shin-Fuji, Hyperdia is telling me Hikari 589 will take me to Kokura. This will work right? As long as the name is Hikari or Sakura the JRPass will work? It doesn't matter what train number it is?
