Tokyo to Nagano and Matsumoto

We are traveling to Nagano and Matsumoto and are wondering if we should take the slow train to Matsumoto from Shinjuku (for the scenery) or if we should take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano and then visit Matsumoto as a side trip. Any advice? Is the scenery worth it?

Also, we would like to travel from Kyoto to Tokyo on the day that our flight leaves from Narita. We would need to be at Narita at 3pm. Is this wise?

Thanks

Hi there,

Honestly I would take the train (the Azusa Express), it's a pleasant ride and you do see much more from the outside scenery than from the Shinkansen. Also personally I love limited express trains, they somehow give a more relaxed feeling that the always busy and fast Shinkansen (you will get the ride the Shinkansen anyhow).

For travel from Kyoto - Narita Airport, yes it is possible to make the trip on the same day. However keep in mind that if for whatever reason trains can't ride you may be staying a little longer in Japan. It is a very rare occurrence and hardly ever happens but the risk is there. The trip takes about 4 hours but keep in mind that you will want to be at Narita Airport at least 2 hours before departure.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
