Hi, I have trip to Japan from Aug 10 - 16, my plan is to use 7-day JRPass as follow:

10/8: arrive Narita airport (Terminal 1) at 8:00
move to Osaka
Discover Osaka, stay 1 night

11/08: afternoon move to Kyoto
Discover Kyoto, stay 1 night

12/08: afternoon move to Nikko
Discover Nikko, stay 1 night

13/08: afternoon move to Tokyo
stay 4 night (13,14,15,16)

15/08: go to Hakone and back Tokyo within 1 day

16/08: go to Yokohama and back Tokyo

Please advice me whether I can use JRPass for this trip reasonably? Besides, please also suggest me if you find any unsuitable points in my trip.

Thank you.

Hi there,

That's plenty of travel and you will make outstanding use of the JR Pass using it for this itinerary. Also I love the inclusion of Kyoto and Nikko in the itinerary, these are some of my personal favorites.

Hakone is also amazing and offers plenty to do. You could purchase a Hakone Free Pass as companion to your JR Pass. I must say though that one night Kyoto and going to to Nikko the following day involved a lot of travel time and think it would be nicer to have a day or two more to spend in Kyoto.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks so much for your comment.

Could you advice me more details in using JRPass for this itinerary? Take which train at which station to get those places?

Hi,
You can go to Hyperdia and just plug in your starting point and end point, plus date/time that you like. But be sure under "More Options" to deselect "Nozomi..." since you can't ride that on the Pass.

For which stations to start from, it is pretty cut and dried - you can take the bullet train from Tokyo Stn, or others, go to Shin-Osaka Stn, Kyoto Stn, go up to see Nikko and get off at Nikko Stn, etc. Ultimately it's impossible to directly answer your question without knowing where your hotel is. You might need to take another train, or even subway to get to a major rail station. And please remember that nearly all non-JR trains, plus subways are not covered under the pass.

I agree that if you could add another day or two to the Kyoto area it would be very worthwhile. Seeing Nara for at least half a day is definitely worth it - the Todaiji Great Buddha is a must see place. Osaka is better from the evening, to see such places as Dotonbori, plus the night views from the Umeda Sky Bldg.

Himeji has Japan's best castle and is also worth going to.

Best of luck.
